Why does nobody talk about the price of a "free" phone going from $0 to $800 in 18 months?
I was cleaning out my email and found an old receipt from a phone store in Denver. Back in early 2023, I got a new phone for $0 down with a 24 month plan, and the total cost was about $400 spread over two years. I looked at the same plan this week and the exact same phone now costs $799 if you want it with no trade in. The stores switched from showing you the full price to hiding it in monthly payments, so a $33 a month charge feels small until you add it up. I did the math and over 18 months the price basically doubled while the plan stayed the same. Has anyone else noticed a "free" or cheap phone deal that quietly turned into a full price purchase when you read the fine print?
