I stopped trusting the headline on a viral stat when I read the fine print of where it came from
I kept hearing a stat at work that said 80 percent of people can't afford a surprise $400 bill, and everyone just repeated it. When I actually looked up the source, it was one survey from 2016 with about 1,000 people, and the way they worded the question made it sound worse than it was. I started asking my own customers at the shop in a casual way and got way different answers, most said they could cover a few hundred if they had a week to plan. So now I check who ran the poll and how many people answered before I pass anything along. Does anyone else have a bad stat that got repeated so much you started to believe it?
