I used to think the 1 in 4 stat about teens was solid, then I read the actual survey questions
Last month I got into an argument online about that 1 in 4 teens stat that goes around every few months, and I was the one defending it hard, posting it in three group chats like it was proven fact. Then I actually pulled the survey it came from and read pages 14 through 22 of the methodology, and the sample was only 480 kids from a single metro area, weighted way up. Only 61 of them answered yes to the question they were counting, which is nowhere near a quarter of anything real. I felt pretty dumb, since I had been sharing it for two years without once checking the source. Now I do this thing where I find the original PDF before I repost any number, even if it sounds harmless. What stat did you used to trust until you went and read the actual study behind it?
Does it really matter though? Like yeah the sample was small but the general idea that a lot of teens deal with this stuff isn't exactly shocking... not sure reading every PDF changes that.
