My sample size mistake caught by a random Reddit commenter
I was writing up a stat about local unemployment and how it dropped 2.1% in one quarter. Felt solid until someone pointed out my sample was only 38 people from one zip code in Cleveland. Honestly, I never even thought to check the methodology behind the source. So I dug into the raw data and the CI was huge, like plus or minus 4.8%. Now I always look for the sample size and margin before I quote anything. Has anyone else had a stat fall apart after checking the source notes?
