That 73% stat about Americans living paycheck to paycheck is doing a lot of heavy lifting
I keep seeing that 73% number thrown around online and it bugs me because it came from a survey of just over 1,000 people done by a payday loan company. When I looked at the actual questions, they counted anyone who said they'd struggle with a $400 emergency, which is not the same thing as living paycheck to paycheck. The real number from the Fed's own data is closer to 35%, which is still bad but half the scary headline. Why does nobody ever check who paid for the study before sharing it?
