That 90% customer satisfaction stat on the pizza box was total fiction

Picked up a frozen pizza from Safeway last week and the box claimed 90% of customers rated it excellent. I looked up the company's own website and they surveyed exactly 10 people. So 9 out of 10 thought it was great. That's a joke. Has anyone else noticed these tiny sample sizes on product packages?

Is it really that surprising though? Ten people is basically a rounding error when you're trying to say something meaningful about thousands of customers. They probably picked the smallest group they could find to make that stat work for them.

Used to think sample size didn't matter that much but this totally changed my mind.

My buddy Mark actually worked for a company that did those surveys, and he said they'd sometimes only call 8 people to get the number they wanted on the box. He quit after six months because he felt like a liar.
