TIL a viral stat about 40% of US renters being 'cost-burdened' made me actually check the Census table
A few months back I kept seeing that 40% renters stat shared everywhere and I just accepted it. Then a buddy in Denver pushed back and we spent an evening on the Census ACS table. Turns out the raw number counts anyone paying 30% or more of income, which catches a lot of people who choose to pay extra to live somewhere nice. When you look at the 'severely burdened' group at 50%+, the share drops a lot. I changed my mind on the whole thing. The headline stat isn't lying, it's just a really loose cutoff. Has anyone else dug into the actual tables behind a stat like this?
