TIL my town's 'low crime' stat is hiding something big
I was looking at our county's official crime numbers for last year, all posted on the city website. They claimed property crime dropped 15%. Then I visited the local police department's own log and noticed they only count reported incidents if they're over $500 in value. So a stolen bike worth $200? Not even in the dataset. My neighbor's shed got cleaned out, tools worth maybe $400, and it's just gone from the numbers. Has anyone else run into this kind of reporting trick in their area?

My buddy had his lawnmower stolen and the cops said it didn't matter.

Yeah the "didn't matter" part hits hard. Basically telling you your stuff isn't worth their time. Makes you wonder what even counts as a real crime anymore.

Right? My neighbor's grill got swiped and they basically shrugged at me too.
