Took 11 months but I finally tracked down the source of that '73% of stats are made up' claim, and it came from a blog post with zero sources
The trail led back to a 2011 marketing blog in Fresno that just pulled the number out of thin air, and now I want to know if anyone else has gone down a rabbit hole chasing a stat that turned out to have no real study behind it at all.
I once spent a whole weekend trying to find the source of a quote about writing that turned out to be something some guy said on a podcast in 2009. No book, no article, just a dude talking. So yeah, been there. The part that gets me is how these numbers just keep getting passed around like they mean something. Once one blog says it, fifty other blogs cite that blog, and suddenly it looks like real research.
