Unpopular opinion: that viral "83% of people live paycheck to paycheck" stat is doing a lot of heavy lifting
So I got into it with a buddy last month about that 83% paycheck to paycheck number that went everywhere, and he bet me $50 I couldn't prove it was softer than it looked. I picked option A, dig into the actual survey, over option B, just share the headline like everyone else. Took me about 3 hours on the LendingClub and PYMNTS source docs and sure enough, a big chunk of those people had savings and investments, they just meant their cash flow felt tight that month. The question wording was loose, like "do you feel like you spend most of your check," which is a feeling, not a hard number. My buddy paid up because the stat was technically true but the way it got passed around made it sound way worse than the data supported. Now I can't stop seeing it, it pops up in like every fifth finance post I scroll past. So when you see a poll number go viral, how do you even check the wording before you share it, because clearly most people aren't?

Man, my buddy got burned by one of these last year. He shared that "half of workers would fail a basic money quiz" thing and felt real smart about it, then his sister looked up the actual quiz and it was stuff like naming a coin. Totally fake-hard. He deleted the post so fast. Now he always taps the source link first and looks for the exact question they asked, not just the headline number. Takes like two minutes and saves you the embarrassment. Did your buddy stay mad about the 50 bucks or was he cool about it?
