DAE remember when the school lunch pizza looked edible? Pulled up photos from 2014 vs 2024 at my old middle school
Deep dive into the district's nutrition page showed the swap from a 12 inch rectangle to an 8 inch oval happened in one summer. Some parents say it's just cutting waste, others say the slice basically lost 40 percent of its area for the same price. Anyone got a real source on when the recipe actually changed?
Actually the 40 percent number isn't right if you do the math. A 12 inch rectangle isn't 12 by 12, it's usually 12 by 8 or so, which comes out to around 96 square inches. An 8 inch oval is maybe 50 square inches at best, so you're looking at closer to a 50 percent drop, not 40. The bigger thing people miss is the thickness though. Some districts kept the weight the same by making it thicker, so the area shrank but the actual food didn't change much. You'd have to check the district's bid contracts or the USDA Foods ordering records to see when the product code switched, those are usually public if you file for them.
