My buddy swore those earthing mats are a scam, now I'm not sure
He said grounding mats have zero peer-reviewed studies backing them up, but my cousin in Denver claims her sleep improved after 2 weeks of using one. Has anyone here actually tested one with a multimeter or just relying on vibes?

Call your cousin a liar and tell your buddy he's right, thats the only way to settle it. The whole grounding thing sounds like expensive magic that makes people feel better because they spent money on it. If I plug a mat into my wall outlet without a proper grounding rod, isn't that just a fancy rug at that point?

Expensive magic" is the perfect way to put it, my buddy spent like $300 on a grounding box and his stereo sounds the same to me.

That $80 bottle of "audiophile grade" distilled water for your turntable is literally the same stuff in my $1 jug from the grocery store, people just get real attached to things once they've dropped cash on them. I've seen it with HDMI cables at Best Buy too, guy swore the $200 one made his Netflix "crisper.
