Hot take: that 5 second microwave rule for dish sponges is total garbage
My roommate swore by this TikTok hack about nuking sponges for 5 seconds to kill bacteria. I tried it for two weeks and our kitchen started smelling like a damp basement. Turns out a study from 2017 showed microwaving sponges actually concentrates bacteria instead of killing it. Who else fell for this myth before realizing boiling water for 2 minutes is the only real way?

Ugh yeah the microwave thing is a scam for sure. I switched to just tossing my sponges in the dishwasher once a week, top rack, heated dry cycle. They come out smelling totally clean and last way longer than boiling. Bonus is I dont have to stand there watching a pot of water. Also started buying those scrub brushes with replaceable heads instead so I dont have to deal with gross sponges as much.
