That viral "miracle HVAC hack" article from last week is pure garbage

I saw that article about using aluminum foil on your condenser coils to "boost efficiency by 40%" and nearly choked on my coffee. I work on these units daily in Phoenix, where it hits 115, and even a thin layer of dust kills airflow. My buddy Mike tried that foil trick on his Trane unit near Glendale and it overheated the compressor in 3 days, cost him $800 for a replacement. Has anyone else run into these DIY "hacks" that just wreck your equipment?

You know, that reminds me of the time my neighbor tried to clean his AC with one of those pressure washer attachments. He ended up bending half the fins flat and then complained it wasn't cooling. Took me a whole afternoon to straighten them back out with a fin comb. People just don't think before they try these things.

Eh, seems fixable though.

Dude I did the same thing on my 2019 unit last summer. Got way too aggressive with the pressure nozzle and folded a solid 30% of the coils. My wife was not happy when I had to run to the hardware store at 8pm for a fin comb. Took me like two hours to get them all straightened out but it worked fine after. Now I just use a garden hose on mist setting and keep my distance.
