I spent two days arguing with a neighbor about that viral tax article, quoting the 85% figure like it was gospel, then I actually read the methodology section buried on page 4 and saw the sample was 47 people from one golf course. The paper never ran a correction, just swapped the number to 52% without a note, and that's when I realized most 'stats' in these stories are just vibe checks with a calculator. Has anyone else caught a publication quietly editing a number after the fact, or do they usually just let it ride?

Did you ever check if that golf course was even in the county? I caught a local outlet doing the same thing with a school bond vote, they said 70% of parents backed it but the survey link was only sent to the PTA email list, and when I called them out they just shrugged and said the story was already online. These days I always peek at the fine print before I share anything, and if the sample size looks like a dinner party, I treat the whole thing like a rumor until a real report drops.
