TIL that 'detox tea' influencer ad I fell for had zero science behind it

I bought a $40 detox tea from an Instagram ad last month after seeing it in three different stories. After two days of bad cramps I looked up the ingredients and found out it was basically just laxatives with marketing. Has anyone else gotten burned by those health product ads?

Oh man, my buddy Sarah bought a whole month supply of some "slim down tea" last year and spent like 80 bucks. She was on the toilet for a solid week before her doctor told her it was just a laxative with pretty packaging.

I actually read a report from Consumer Reports a while back that tested a bunch of these "detox teas" and found most of them were just herbal laxatives mixed with a little caffeine. Same thing, different packaging. They tested like 12 brands and only 2 of them even listed their ingredients clearly. Sarah's story doesn't surprise me one bit. My neighbor tried a similar one and ended up dehydrated because she was going to the bathroom so much. It's wild what people will pay for something that's basically just a fancy laxative.

$40 for laxatives in a fancy package, that's insane.
