My cousin showed me a viral 'lake monster' video from our hometown and I was literally standing in the spot it was filmed
I grew up in Sandusky, Ohio and some clip of a 'creature' in the bay got 4 million views on Facebook. My cousin sent it to me all excited because it looked like our old fishing spot near the paper mill. I watched it twice and noticed the same crooked dock piling in the background that I used to tie my boat to when I was 14. The 'monster' was just a half sunk tarp with some branches stuck in it, and you could see the yellow rope holding it down if you paused at 0:31. I drove down there the next day and took a photo of the exact spot, same dock, same rope, no monster. The original poster finally admitted in the comments it was a student film project but by then the local news had already run a story about it. Why do these things blow up before anybody just zooms in on the actual footage?
