A flat tire on I-70 near Hays turned into the best week I've had at my new job
I got a flat on I-70 outside Hays, Kansas on a Monday and thought my week was shot, but a retired trucker named Dale helped me change it and we talked for 40 minutes about how he drove 2.8 million miles without a bad wreck. That talk got me thinking about the safety training at my warehouse job, so I started writing down every close call the crew mentioned for five days straight. Ended up with 23 incidents nobody had ever reported, and my manager wants me to present it next month. Has anyone else ever had a random stranger shift how you see your own job?
Had something like that happen at a gas station in Salina when this old guy saw my work boots and started telling me about losing two fingers on a conveyor back in '89. Made me actually look at the guard rails on our line instead of just walking past them every day like they were furniture. Wrote up six things I'd been ignoring for months and my lead got them fixed in a week. Funny how it takes a stranger to make you see stuff that's right in front of you.
