A guy at the lumber yard showed me a simple trick for finding studs without a detector.

I was grabbing some 2x4s in Denver last month and an old framer stopped me. He said to just tap the wall with your knuckle and listen for the solid thud, then look for the tiny nail dimples in the paint. Anyone else got a weird old school tip that actually works better than the modern tool?

Tbh the knuckle tap trick is legit, I've found more studs that way than with my cheap detector. Plus the nail dimple method saved me when I was hanging shelves in my old apartment and didn't want to buy anything fancy.

Feels like half the stuff we're told to buy fancy versions of can be replaced with just paying attention and using what you've got. Your own two hands and some common sense beat a lot of gadgets in my experience.
