A stranger's offhand comment about my grocery habit made me audit my actual cart
Standing in the checkout line at Albertsons last Tuesday, the cashier said 'you must really like pasta night' and I realized I'd bought the exact same 7 items for 11 weeks running, so has anyone else had a bystander force them to notice their own rut?
The cashier noticing that you had the same cart says less about your eating habits and more about how invisible we are to ourselves in routines. A stranger sees what we never stop to watch, because we are too busy just doing the errand. What got me thinking is that maybe the rut is not the items, but the fact you keep shopping at the same time, same store, same lane, around the same hungry feeling. Changing one thing, even like going on a Tuesday morning instead of after work, might break the whole loop without you forcing a new recipe list. Sometimes the fix is not the food, it's the frame around it.
