Can we talk about the hard drive failure that killed my whole photo archive?

My Seagate 2TB external drive from 2021 just died without warning last Tuesday. Lost about 4,000 photos from a trip to Yellowstone because I thought backing up once a quarter was good enough. Anybody else get burned by a drive that seemed fine until it wasn't?

Yeah that "seemed fine until it wasn't" thing got me too. Lost a bunch of family videos from a dead WD drive back in 2019. After that I started using Backblaze, it's like 7 bucks a month and automatically backs up everything. Also grabbed a second external drive and do a manual copy of important stuff every few weeks, just drag and drop. The cloud backup saved me when my laptop drive died last year, got everything back in a day.

Olivia, did you go with the yearly Backblaze or just month to month? I signed up after my old Seagate clicked its last click (you know the sound) and I've been pretty happy with it. The big thing for me was finally setting up an actual schedule for my manual backup, I pick the first Sunday of every month and my phone reminds me. It feels dumb but having that routine makes it so I don't forget for six months at a time.

Oh man, that's exactly how it went for me too! I had a hard drive just start making weird noises and then nothing, lost a whole folder of vacation photos and it stung for months.
