Hit 1000 days on my Duolingo streak and it weirded me out

So I opened the app yesterday and it said I've been learning Spanish for 1000 days straight. That's almost 3 years of doing 5 minutes a day. I never thought I'd stick with it that long. I barely remember why I started. Has anyone else had a random milestone like this just sneak up on them?

The thing that got me about hitting 1000 days is how little I actually learned. Five minutes a day is basically nothing, right? I think Duolingo is more about tricking your brain into forming a habit than actually teaching you a language. I can order tacos in Spanish but I still can't follow a conversation on the news.

Heard a buddy hit 500 days on French and just stared at his phone for five minutes.

My friend Rachel hit 600 days on Spanish and then realized she still couldn't order coffee without panicking (she just points at pastries now). The streak is basically just a bright green dopamine trap.
