PSA: I mocked the $15 grounding bracelet for PC builds until my motherboard fried

I built PCs for 10 years without ever touching one, figured it was just a gimmick for newbies. Then I killed a brand new ASUS board last month after shuffling my socks on carpet in my apartment. Anyone else have a hardware myth they ignored until it cost them real money?

@williamhenderson hit it right with the peace of mind bit. I actually used to build PCs on my carpeted floor back in college because my desk was a mess, and I got away with it for years. Then one time I built a rig for a friend, took my usual shortcuts, and the motherboard wouldn't post. It turned out to be a tiny static zap that killed one of the memory slots. That was the moment I started clipping the bracelet to my case too, even though I felt dumb doing it at first. Funny how we ignore the cheap safety stuff until our own hardware pays the price.

Did you ever try one of those anti-static mats too? I got the same wakeup call after zapping a GPU years ago, now I keep the bracelet clipled to the case frame every time. The peace of mind alone is worth the 15 bucks after you've felt that little shock and held your breath.
