That 'automatic moisture meter' trick for plant care? Total gimmick until I tried it my way

I was killing my snake plant even though I followed every watering guide online. Then I got sick of guessing and bought a $15 moisture meter from the hardware store last month. I stuck it in near the drainage hole instead of the top inch like everyone says, and that changed everything. The top inch was always dry but the bottom was soaked. I started watering only when the bottom 2 inches read dry and my plant finally bounced back. Has anyone else found that the standard instructions for these meters are just wrong?

Manufacturers probably test those things with their eyes closed, same folks who say "water when top inch is dry" while your plant's roots are basically swimming.

Yea the "top inch dry" thing has killed more of my plants than anything else lol. I've got this big monstera in my living room that started getting sad leaves even though I was following that rule exactly. Turned out the bottom 3/4 of the pot was basically a swamp, roots were starting to rot and everything. Now I just stick my whole finger down in there or use a chopstick to check deeper. Feels like those care instructions are written by people who never actually owned a plant.

Nah @nancy_wood nailed it. Top inch is junk advice.
