TIL my dentist's 10 minute chat about flossing changed how I read product labels
Last Tuesday I was in the chair getting a filling replaced, and my dentist mentioned that she never buys anything with more than 5 ingredients on the label. Then she pointed out that most 'deep clean' toothpastes are just marketing with extra abrasives, and the real win is just brushing longer. I went home and checked my bathroom shelf, turned out my $8 tube had 12 ingredients and my $2 store brand had 4. Now I'm looking at food packaging, cleaning sprays, even my shampoo with that same rule. It hit different because she wasn't selling anything, just sharing a habit she built over 20 years of seeing enamel damage. Has anyone else applied a simple numeric rule like that to another part of their routine? What's your cutoff for ingredient lists?
Honestly, counting ingredients feels like a good way to stress yourself out for no real reason. Half the stuff in toothpaste is there to keep it from turning into a rock in the tube. More power to her, but I doubt my gums care about the difference between ingredient number 5 and number 12.
