Am I the only one who skips shade cloth for desert patios?
I used to throw up 80% shade cloth over my Tucson patio every May, but after last summer's heatwave I pulled it all down and now rely on a mix of gravel, potted mesquite trees, and a misting line I built myself. The shade cloth just trapped the hot air underneath and made the space feel like a sauna, plus it killed my view of the Catalina mountains. Has anyone else ditched the cloth and gone with passive cooling tricks, or am I asking for a sunburn disaster in June?

Whoa, good for you! Honestly, I've noticed this same pattern everywhere, not just patios. People slap on the quick fix like shade cloth or AC units, but forget the space underneath still cooks. Your mix of gravel and trees is basically how old desert homes did it, just working with the land instead of against it. I bet the view alone is worth the extra sweat, and that misting line sounds like a solid middle ground.
