Misted my cactus wall with the wrong water for 3 months in Tucson
Overheard a guy at the nursery say tap water minerals clog the pores on desert succulents, switched to distilled and they finally stopped getting those brown spots. Anyone else deal with hard water issues on their desert plants?

OH man that tap water thing is SO real. I live in Phoenix and my agaves were getting those crusty white deposits on their leaves until I switched to distilled water for my indoor succulents. The minerals really DO clog the pores like you said, and in Tucson your water is basically liquid rock. I actually started collecting rainwater in a bucket during monsoon season and using that for my outdoor barrel cactus too. It made a HUGE difference in just a couple weeks, the new growth came in so much greener and healthier.

Rain barrels are worth the setup effort for sure. The minerals in tap water build up fast and block the plants from breathing right. Monsoon water is basically free fertilizer for desert plants.

It's wild how often we overlook the obvious stuff like water quality, right? I swear, the same thing happens with so many things we just assume are fine. Like, people buy expensive skincare but then wash their face with scorching hot tap water loaded with chlorine and wonder why their skin is irritated. Or they spend hundreds on a coffee machine but never descale it, then complain their espresso tastes burnt. It's always that one small, boring variable that actually makes or breaks the whole setup. Your cactus issue just reminded me that "good enough" water is rarely actually good enough for anything picky.
