Got to poke around a truck stop garage near Bakersfield last weekend

Saw a Cummins ISX that had 890,000 miles on it with the original head gasket still holding. Have any of you seen an engine last that long without major work?

890k on an original head gasket? Sounds like a fairy tale to me.

I read a thread on a Honda forum where a guy in Oregon claimed 1.1 million on his original Civic head gasket before it finally let go. Ngl, I'm skeptical of these big claims too, but these older inline fours from the 90s are just built different if you don't overload the cooling system. The stock gasket on a 4AGE or a D-series is actually pretty tough if the engine never overheats. Tbh, I think a lot of it comes down to the owner and if they actually do the coolant flushes on time. Honestly, 890k is wild but I've seen a few legit maintenance logs online that back up numbers like that for certain engines.

Damn, okay you actually got me thinking here. I used to be one of those people who'd roll their eyes at anything over 400k on a stock head gasket. Thought it was pure luck or someone lying on the internet for clout. But seeing people post actual maintenance logs with dates and mileage is hard to argue with. Those old school Honda and Toyota four bangers really were built different. Guess I gotta eat some crow on this one.
