Heard a guy at a truck stop say he runs his Jakes at idle, got me thinking
I was fueling up outside of Knoxville last Tuesday and this old timer with a Pete 379 said he leaves his engine brake on at idle to keep the turbo spooled and warm in cold weather. I always thought that hammered the valves and wasted fuel, but he swore he's done it for 180k miles with no issues. Anyone else run their Jacobs at a stop or is this guy just asking for a rebuild?

That old timer might have gotten lucky so far, but 180k is nothing on a diesel. Jake brakes are made for braking, not idling, and keeping that much pressure on the exhaust valves all night just heats things up without any real benefit. Turbo stays warm enough on its own with a simple high idle or just letting the truck run for a minute before you roll. A rebuild costs way more than a little extra fuel to warm up proper.
