I finally stopped torquing head bolts by feel after a $4,800 lesson
Been doing diesel heads for 9 years and always trusted the wrist method, but a 6.0 Powerstroke customer came back with a blown gasket 40 miles after I finished near Tulsa. Pulled it apart and two bolts were 10 ft-lbs under spec, just enough to let the gasket walk. Anyone else here still refuse to drag a torque wrench out on warranty jobs or am I the only one who paid that dumb tax?

Forty miles. That's brutal, man. I'd have thrown the whole damn truck off a cliff. Ten foot pounds is nothing, that's like the difference between a good firm push and a slightly less firm push, and it cost you damn near five grand.
