Spent 6 hours hunting a phantom air leak, it was a $4 o-ring in the governor
2007 Freightliner with a Detroit series 60, idle surging like it had a heartbeat. Checked every boot, clamp, and line with soapy water for hours. Even borrowed a smoke machine from the guy next bay. Finally pulled the governor cover off and the o-ring was flattened on one side. Six hours for a part smaller than my thumb. Anyone else had a cheap seal waste half a shift?

Last month I killed a whole Saturday on a 3126 that kept blowing white smoke. Turned out to be a $6 seal in the fuel pressure regulator. I laid there under the hood with a flashlight and a mirror for like three hours before I even thought to look at it. The smoke machine trick is smart though, I just wish the cheap parts would fail in a way that's easier to spot.
