Went to a shop in Dallas that bragged about their "certified" techs

Stopped by a Cummins shop off I-35 last week to pick up a part. The guy out front had a sign saying all their techs were certified. But I watched one kid try to torque head bolts with a regular ratchet and a prayer. No torque wrench in sight. I asked the manager about it and he just shrugged. Anyone else run into shops that slap certifications on the wall but let people work like that?

Honestly I've seen that kind of stuff way too often. Certifications don't mean much if nobody actually enforces proper procedures. That head bolt thing is scary because that's just basic engine building 101, no way around it. Ngl I'd rather take my truck to a shop with old school guys who've been doing it 20 years than some place with fresh certs on the wall.

Six years ago a buddy of mine took his Mustang to a place that just got a big fancy ASE sign out front. They torqued his main caps wrong, one came loose at 70 mph, took out the whole bottom end. The owner just shrugged and said "we're certified, doesn't mean we're perfect." I'll take a guy who's been doing flat rate since before I was born over a framed piece of paper any day. You can't fake 20 years of busted knuckles and stripped bolts.

Used to think ASE meant you were getting the best of the best honestly. But hearing stories like that Mustang makes me realize it's really just a fancy piece of paper if the person holding it doesn't care. Seen a few shops near me that advertise their certs heavy but the work quality is all over the place. Experience still beats a test score every time.
