Shoutout to the guy who convinced me color theory actually matters in digital art

I always thought color theory was just some fancy art school thing that didn't apply to my rough sketches. Then last month I tried using a basic triadic color palette on a landscape piece and the whole thing popped way more than my usual random picks. Has anyone else had a specific color combo that totally changed how they approach their work?

the whole thing popped" is exactly right. I tried a split complementary palette once and my piece went from looking like a toddler's finger painting to actually halfway decent. Still can't pick a color scheme to save my life though, I just steal them from other artists now.

Oh man, "the whole thing popped" is exactly how I felt when I figured out complementary colors. I was doing a portrait and switched my background to a muted blue-green opposite the warm skin tones, and it just looked so much more finished without me having to add a bunch of extra details. My go-to now is a split-complementary setup, like a teal base with coral and yellow accents (keeps it from feeling too harsh). It's wild how much a simple palette can carry a piece when you aren't overthinking it.

Stole that split complement setup idea from you, tried it with a warm purple instead of teal and it worked way better than I expected. The whole "less is more" thing in color theory feels like cheating sometimes but hey it works.
