Small win with my digital painting textures
After weeks of practice, I got the texture on a rock to look real. It feels good to see progress. How do you guys approach texture work in your art?

Yeah, nice work on the rock, but chasing perfect realism can sometimes work against you if the piece has a more stylized look. I always rough in the basic texture with a messy brush first, then dial back the detail so it doesn't overpower everything else. It's easy to get lost in adding every little speck and end up with a busy mess. Leaving some areas softer lets the eye focus where you want it.

Oh wow, this is so true. It happens in all sorts of areas, not just art. We get obsessed with tiny details and lose sight of what really matters. Like trying to fix every little flaw until nothing looks right anymore. Stepping back and leaving some things rough actually helps the important parts shine. It's a lesson I keep learning the hard way.

After five layers of texture, my rock looked more confused than realistic.

Texture FOMO is real. I ruined a whole cliff painting last month because I kept zooming in and adding tiny cracks. The smudge tool at 30% opacity is my best friend for knocking back overworked spots. Sometimes you just gotta flip the canvas and blur your eyes to see if it reads as rock from five feet away. If it's just a noisy lump, smudge the heck out of it and call it a day.
