I finally figured out why my phone storage kept filling up for no reason

For like two years I kept deleting apps and photos every month because my 64gb phone was always full. I thought I just took too many pictures. Then last Tuesday I was looking through my file manager app and noticed a folder called "WhatsApp Images" that was 12GB alone. Turns out every photo someone sent me in a chat was auto-saving to my phone since 2019. I never even looked at those pictures again. Deleted the whole folder and got back almost half my storage. Now I turned off the auto-save setting. Anyone else have a hidden app hogging space like that?

My buddy Dave has a 128 gig phone and he was complaining about the same thing. Turns out his "Recently Deleted" album in Photos had 8,000 items in it from like 2021. He never actually emptied it because he thought it did it automatically after 30 days or whatever. I checked mine after he told me and I had 4 gigs of screenshots and blurry photos I took of my car engine from 2019. The worst part is I sat there scrolling through them like a moron before deleting, just seeing a timeline of dumb stuff I thought was important at the time.

Same thing happened to me @nathankim, I found 2 years of random receipts in there.

The part where nathankim said he sat there scrolling through dumb photos like a timeline really hit me. That's just how everything works now. You don't notice how much digital junk you accumulate until you actually stop and look. It's like cleaning out your junk drawer in the kitchen except the drawer is your whole phone and it's filled with crap from years ago that served its purpose for like two seconds. I bet most people have this issue with multiple apps not just WhatsApp. Instagram, Snapchat, even your browser caches stuff you'll never see again. The worst part is these companies design it that way on purpose so you run out of room and feel like you need a new phone.
