My coworker told me my desktop gave her anxiety - so I changed one thing

She walked past my station during shift change and said 'how can you find anything with 87 icons covering that wallpaper?' I thought she was joking but then I noticed I was spending 5 minutes every morning just hunting for the file I needed. So I grouped everything into 5 folders by category and set a rule to clean up new downloads every Sunday night. Has anyone else had someone call them out like that and actually had it help?

87 icons covering that wallpaper" sounds about right for my old work computer. I had a coworker once tell me my desk looked like a bomb went off, so I cleared everything off the surface and ended up losing my favorite pen for three weeks.

Right, and that's the other side of it - you overcorrect and lose stuff because you went too far. The trick is finding that middle ground where you can still see your wallpaper but don't have to dig through a digital junk drawer. I did the same thing with my browser bookmarks after someone pointed out it took me three refreshes just to find the one I needed each time. Ended up making a "quick access" folder with the five I actually use daily and everything else got shoved into a catch-all "old stuff" folder. Now I can get to my booking page, the shift schedule, and the hospital intranet in under two clicks instead of scrolling through a mile long list every single time.

@johnson.river three weeks for a pen just sounds like you didn't look hard enough, doesn't it?
