My external drive with 9 years of photos just died mid-transfer

Last Tuesday I was finally moving everything to a new NAS and the old Seagate just clicked twice and went silent. Lost about 2,000 family pictures because I never backed up the backup. Has anyone else had a drive fail right when they tried to organize it, or am I just cursed?
