A friend in Bangkok called my 'work anywhere' setup a security nightmare
He pointed out my public Wi-Fi habit and said my client files were basically open for grabs. I bought a travel router and a cheap VPN the next day, and now I won't even check email without it. Anyone have a better VPN they swear by for Asia?

Yeah, that part about the travel router being set up wrong is key. A router is just another piece of gear, and if you don't lock it down right, it's like leaving your front door open. @owens.blair's friend learned that the hard way. A VPN is a good layer, but it's not a magic fix for a bad setup. You gotta make sure the router itself has a strong password and updated software, or you're just adding a step for no real gain.

That "open for grabs" line hits hard. My buddy had his travel router set up wrong in Manila, thought he was safe. Someone still got into his hotel's network and snagged a contract draft before he sent it. He uses ExpressVPN now, says the speeds in Singapore and Tokyo are solid for video calls. That scare was enough to make him double check every connection.

Manila's a big city, but that story sounds a bit much... like how do you even know for sure someone grabbed the draft that way? Could've been a dozen other things.
