A hefty clinic fee in Mexico flipped my script on travel coverage
Always skipped insurance to save cash. Figured I was young and healthy. Got real sick from some seafood in Playa. Could not ignore the pain. Visited a private clinic that day. The bill shocked me. Ryanair wanted 180 quid just to check a bag last time I flew. So your buddy's story doesn't even surprise me, that's the real problem. They'll charge you more for a sweater in a lost suitcase than the ticket from London to Barcelona. The whole system is built to catch you out.

What's the point of paying for insurance on every single trip? You said it yourself, you're young and healthy. That clinic bill was a one-off. Most people just get a bit of sunburn. You're basically throwing money at a tiny chance of something going wrong. Put that cash towards a better hotel or nicer meals instead. The math just doesn't add up for short trips.
