Chose a hostel over Airbnbs for 3 months, here's what changed
I was bouncing between private Airbnbs in Lisbon and Bangkok for like a year, paying around $45 a night each time. Then my bank card got flagged and I had to crash somewhere cheap fast, so I booked a 6-bed dorm in Medellin for $12. Honestly, the lack of privacy was rough at first, but I met more people in one week than I did in the previous six months. The wifi was actually better too since the hostel had a dedicated line for remote workers. Anyone else tried swapping to hostels for a stretch, and did you end up staying longer than you planned?

Read a study once that said people in hostels end up staying twice as long in a city because they build a little community fast. That tracks with what you saw, the social side makes up for the cramped rooms. Sounds like the tradeoff is worth it if you can handle sharing a bathroom for a bit.
