I finally listened to that random guy in a Chiang Mai cafe
He told me to stop booking hostels before I arrived. Said I'd find better deals walking in. I thought he was full of it. First three hostels I walked into last month gave me rates 40% lower than online. Now I only book the first night anywhere. Anyone else ditch advance booking?

Has anyone else tried this with guesthouses in smaller towns too? @barbara_jenkins66 that guy probably saved me a couple hundred bucks just last month alone... same thing happened to me in Pai, walked into this little place off the main road and got a room for half of what Booking was showing. The real trick is showing up early in the day though, that's when they're still trying to fill beds and will cut you a deal.

Showing up early is definitely the move, gives you way more bargaining power lol.
