In Chiang Mai, my SIM card setup took 4 days to fix

I landed here thinking I'd grab a local SIM at the airport and be online in 20 minutes. Turns out my phone was locked to my US carrier, and the shop in the mall couldn't unlock it. I spent 2 days bouncing between three different telecom offices, each one telling me a different story. The third office finally filled out a form that took 48 hours to process and email back. So instead of 1 hour, I was offline for 4 whole days in a city where everything runs through Line and Grab. Anyone else run into a locked phone issue while traveling, or was that just my bad luck?
