Lost my entire client database when my laptop died on a beach in Bali
Was working from a co-working space in Ubud when my MacBook just went black, no backup, and I spent 3 days calling clients from memory to rebuild my freelancer roster - has anyone else had a tech failure wipe out their work while traveling?

Oh come on, you stored your only copy on a laptop that you took to the beach? Sand and saltwater are basically the two worst enemies of electronics. I'd say you learned the hard way that cloud backups exist for exactly this reason.

Yeah, you hit it with "learned the hard way" because thats kind of how most of us figure out backups. It's like people never think about the stuff they actually rely on until it's gone, whether thats a phone or a wallet or a roof over your head.

Know a coworker who did almost the same thing with his phone at the lake last summer. He set it down on a towel to take a group photo, then a wave came up and soaked everything. Phone was dead before he even got back to the car, and he lost like two years of vacation photos and contacts. He now keeps everything on Google Drive and a separate external hard drive at home.
