My 'reliable' portable monitor died on a train in Chiang Mai

I mean, I thought I was being smart buying this backup screen for client calls, but it just flickered out mid-presentation somewhere between stations. Had to finish the whole call using my phone propped against a water bottle. Has anyone else had a hardware fail at the worst possible moment while traveling, and what did you switch to?

And that is exactly why I stopped trusting portable screens entirely. I read somewhere last year that most of these compact monitors use the same cheap display panels, so they all tend to die the same way, sudden flicker then nothing. It happened to me with a brand that had thousands of good reviews, so I know how frustrating it is to be left holding a dark slab. What I switched to is a small folding stand for my tablet and a decent Bluetooth keyboard. The tablet screen is bright enough for outdoor calls, and the stand weighs less than the monitor did anyway. If I really need a second screen, I just borrow a hotel TV with an HDMI cable, which has saved me more than once.
