The choice between a cheap apartment in Medellin and a nicer one with a real kitchen

I had to pick between a $400 spot in El Poblado with a hot plate and a microwave, or a $650 place in Laureles with a full stove and oven. I went with the cheaper one to save cash, but after two weeks of trying to cook pasta in a single pot, I was over it. I moved to the Laureles place last Tuesday and the first thing I did was bake a cake (which was a mess, but a fun one). Anyone else ever pick the budget option for a place and then regret it because you couldn't cook right?

Used to think a hot plate was all I needed, but this post finally made me understand the struggle. Cooking pasta in a single pot while trying to keep everything from burning is just not worth saving a few bucks. Now I'm convinced a proper kitchen is a non-negotiable if you actually enjoy cooking at home.

Ever try to fry an egg in a coffee maker?

Honestly, the steam from the water reservoir might poach it better than fry it.

Ross.christopher, in my experience the real trick is getting the yolk to set without the hot plate burning the edges.
