A cashier at my grocery store said something that helped me more than my therapist
I was buying a single frozen dinner in Cincinnati last month, and the older woman at the register saw my red eyes. She quietly said, 'Honey, the first year is just about getting through the day. Don't worry about the rest yet.' She said it so kindly, and it made me feel normal for just surviving. Has anyone else had a stranger say the exact right thing at a low moment?

You know, I used to think those kind of checkout line comments were just empty noise. But hearing "the first year is just about getting through the day" is so specific and real, it actually means something. It's not just a hope your day gets better, it's permission to not be okay. That cashier nailed it.

Was that after a loss? That's such a simple but perfect thing to say. Those little moments from strangers can really stick with you.

Yeah those little moments really do stick. I mean I still remember this cashier who noticed my tired face and just said "hope your day gets better" like five years ago.
