Cleaned out my closet for the first time since the split

I finally went through his side of the closet after 8 months, bagged up 4 trash bags of clothes for donation. Felt weird to see empty hangers but also kinda freed up space in my head too. Did anyone else find a random object they forgot about in a drawer or something?

Nah I gotta push back on this one. Throwing away all that stuff after 8 months seems way too fast to me. I still got my ex's old hoodie in the back of my closet and it's been almost 2 years. Some stuff like old photos or a worn out t-shirt you wore together can be worth keeping as a memory, not trash bags full of it. Donating everything like that feels like you're trying to erase a whole part of your life instead of just moving on from it. But hey if it works for you and clears your head then you do you.

Haha okay but what if keeping that hoodie is actually making it harder to move on without you even realizing it though? Every time you see it in your closet you're basically reliving that memory instead of letting your brain fully process the breakup. I'm not saying trash everything but having a physical reminder of someone around can keep you stuck in the past longer than you think.

Getting rid of everything that fast feels more like you're running from the pain than working through it to me... those memories are part of who you are now even if it hurts. I held onto a few things from my last breakup and looking back at them after a year actually helped me see how far I'd come instead of dragging me back down.
