Found a cheat code for splitting the marital debt spreadsheet that saved me $2,400
My ex and I were stuck on who pays what for the credit card bills from our joint account. We argued for weeks about who spent what. I finally just printed out 12 months of statements and highlighted every charge by category - groceries, gas, home stuff, personal. Then I proposed splitting it 60/40 based on those totals. She agreed because the numbers were right there in black and white. No more guessing or fighting about who bought what. Has anyone else found a simple trick that actually made the financial part easier?

Did you do this together or just hand her the spreadsheet and hope for the best?

Is it really that big of a deal how she got it? At least the work got done.

Doesn't that really just depend on the situation though? I mean, if she's drowning and needs a lifeline, who cares if she copied a formula from YouTube or asked a friend. The point is the work got done and nobody got hurt.

That spreadsheet approach is pretty solid, actually. But I gotta push back on one thing though. Splitting shared debt 60/40 based on spending categories might not be as fair as it looks on paper. The real trick is making sure you both agree on what counts as "personal" vs "household" spending before you start highlighting. Groceries are usually shared but what about that random Amazon purchase for a birthday gift? That's personal to one person but it benefits the household too. Without clear rules upfront you end up in the same arguments just with a different spreadsheet. The simple fix is to agree on the categories together and maybe leave a small buffer for disagreements.
