Overheard my ex-wife's lawyer say something that finally made sense
I was at the courthouse waiting for our custody hearing and heard her lawyer tell someone that 'divorce is just a business deal with emotions attached.' That hit me harder than I expected. I spent 6 months fighting over who got the good couch when I should have just focused on the parenting schedule and the 401k split. Has anyone else had a random comment from a stranger that actually helped you reframe the whole process?

Oh you mean I didn't NEED to spend three hours arguing about who gets the ugly ceramic owl from our honeymoon? That thing has been in a box since 2018 and I just wanted it out of spite. Now I'm picturing my lawyer billing me for that conversation while I could have been securing the 401k like a normal person. I guess the real lesson is that emotions make you stupid and also make you fight for really stupid stuff. I hope that owl brings her as much joy as it brought me, which is zero.

Okay but did either of you actually stop to think about why that owl was so important to the other person? Like maybe she didn't want it either, she just fought back because you started it. Spite is a hell of a drug, makes two people try to win a prize neither one values. The real loser is the lawyer who had to type "ceramic owl" into the settlement paperwork while probably thinking about his own stupid marriage decisions.
