Question about a thing my lawyer said at our first meeting in her office

She looked right at me and said, 'Your job right now is not to be fair, it's to be safe,' and that one line in her small office on Main Street completely shifted how I handled the whole process. Anyone else have a single piece of advice that just clicked like that?

My old boss in Phoenix told me to stop trying to win every argument and just get to the next meeting. It's a similar idea to @anthonynelson's point about disappointing people nicely. Sometimes the goal isn't to be right or fair in the moment, it's just to keep things moving forward without blowing them up.

Learn to disappoint people nicely, my therapist said, which was a real lightbulb moment for a chronic people-pleaser.

Ever notice how the best advice often tells you to drop a "good person" rule for a survival one?
